“Understanding the factors that motivate and sustain community drug distributors in the changing context of NTD control and elimination”
Working together with the National Programmes for Neglected Tropical Diseases in Uganda and Cote d’Ivoire, we aimed to understand the motivation and experiences of community volunteers delivering drugs every year in mass drug administration activities. Our mixed methods study showed that volunteers are highly motivated despite moderate to high personal costs (financial and opportunity). Volunteers value the intangible benefits they receive participating in the activities. Our findings directly influenced interventions developed and tested in a second phase (ongoing).
“Sustaining the Gains of NTD elimination programs through focused support of community drug distributors”
In this second phase, the research team is supporting the national NTD programme in the implementation of several interventions aimed to support the NTD volunteer by improving knowledge, community support, feedback and recognition. This work is presently ongoing in select communities in 4 districts in Uganda and Cote d’Ivoire.
